Instagram Links: Work Smarter, Not Harder

There are countless benefits to marketing your business on Instagram - with its focus on images and its lively aesthetic, Instagram is the perfect place for merchants to showcase their products, build their brands, and increase sales. But, if there is one grievance about Instagram, it would likely be that you can only use one clickable link in your bio. This can be a real bummer! It puts a limit on the content you can share with your followers. It can’t be fixed by inserting links into individual Instagram posts either. Sure, you can enter the link within your caption—but, once that photo is actually posted, the link will just appear as text. Being able to get where you want to go in a single click is super convenient, and these days we’re all obsessed with convenience and speed. So this “one clickable link” rule is enough to frustrate both the brands and their followers.

With that in mind, there’s no denying the fact that your one clickable link in your bio is precious. It’s the one place where you can get followers directly to your site without any additional work or hassle for your followers. So, here’s the question: What should that link be? Or... Is there a way to get around the “one link” rule? Fortunately for you, we have the scoop on how to answer both of those questions. We’ll cover all you need to know about Instagram bio links—and some clever things you can do with your own.

#1: Do You Really Only Get One Link?

Technically, yes...but there is a way to get around that technicality — using a third party app. We weren’t lying... Instagram itself only allows for one link but in this age of technology, of course there’s an app for that! One app that is definitely worth checking out? We recommend Linktree (we use it too!)

Linktree is a free tool that allows you to send your followers to multiple pages from the single link in your bio. Signing up is easy—you just have to follow the steps on Linktree’s website and then connect your Instagram account. Once you do so, you can create a customized link for your Instagram profile. Then you’re ready to build your link tree, it’s really that simple!

In your tree, you get to add unlimited links to pages on your website. When followers click your link, they’ll be directed to a new screen, and then they can choose page they’d like to view. Check out ours below.

There are two versions of Linktree — the Free version, and the Pro. The awesome thing is, you can upgrade to Pro at anytime, and then downgrade whenever you want to.

You get a pretty great deal with the free version — it includes all of the basics to get you started:

  • Get unlimited links on your Linktree
  • View the total number of times each link has been clicked.
  • See lifetime views on your Linktree.
  • Pick from a selection of Linktree themes.
  • Upload your own profile image.
  • Amazon Influencer Program Integration.

The Pro version is $6/month. However, Pro — in addition to all the basics — has a ton of amazing features.

  • Get questions answered quickly with priority support.
  • Capture your visitors email addresses with the email / newsletter signup integration.
  • Easily link to all your social platforms and website with Icons
  • View a day-by-day breakdown of link traffic.
  • Grant access to your other admins or team members to manage your Linktree.
  • Retarget your Linktree visitors on Facebook and Instagram by adding your Facebook Pixel ID.
  • Adjust branding aesthetic by changing the title of your Linktree & remove the Linktree logo.

...and that is just to name a few! Learn about Pro’s additional features here. There’s a reason Linktree is popular — it does the job, it’s easy to set up, easy to manage and it has a super clean, chic look.

#2: So... What Should Your Link Be?

For many brands, the answer to this is simple: they want their bio link to take followers directly to their website homepage. While that answer may seem obvious, by all means — that does not mean it’s all you can do. There are various options to how you can utilize that space to really leverage your link to your advantage.

The link in your bio holds a lot of importance, and that can be overwhelming. How is something so simple, becoming so complicated? You have so many different pages, posts, products, and campaigns that you want to send Instagram users to. How can you choose just one?

Just relax — the best way to determine your link, is to think back to your goals for your brand’s Instagram. Do you want to engage your followers, or educate new followers? Do you want to drive sales of a specific product or line? Do you want to increase involvement in a particular campaign? Thinking back to your main goal will help you better decide which link will be the best choice for your brand and your unique objectives.

If you’re stuck, but still looking to get creative — Here are a few additional ideas for how you can use that link in your Instagram bio.

  • Send people to a contest, giveaway or freebie — From photo contests to simple giveaways where participants just need to follow you to be entered to win, you have plenty of choices. People love to win!
  • Send people to your blog — Especially if your Instagram goal is to educate your followers, including a link to a helpful blog post is a great way to do that.
  • Send people to a new product or collection page — Then, go one step further and prompt your followers to enter their email once they reach that page.
  • Send people to your contact page — This is a super common page for customers to visit, so it’s a great link to include in your bio and make it easier on your followers.
  • Send people to multiple pages — using LinkTree or another link in bio app!
